HALLOWEEN IS HERE

The day of celebration was fabulous as everyone arrived in costumes and Aurora transformed into a child’s world of Halloween wonder. It took us a while to recognize who you were and which characters you were dressed as. You went for trick or treating, had a fun treasure hunt, a wonderful buffet lunch and finally to end the day a movie. It was a day of joy and delight for us all.

While discovering all about Halloween, the questions of giving and receiving were also asked, through tales of ‘trick or treating’. Throughout our lives, we give, share and receive many things, from big to small, young to old. Within our Aurora family and community, we know how important it is to give. All classes participated in creating gifts such as cookies, cards, pumpkin soup, bags, pictures for all of our support staff.

Thank you, children, for all the love you give to us. We hope that each day at school will always be your happy day.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

BE A CHILD AGAIN

“Be a child again” was a chance to connect parents with children and school, to understand more about how children encounter materials and how parents can support children in their journey of learning and exploring this world.

To share how we invite our children to encounter materials we created four areas for families to explore:

– Clay: Clay is a wonderful natural material that is sustainable, beautiful, and connected to craft traditions around the world. With our school project being Dialogue with Place we asked the families to join our inquiry by contributing to a mosaic installation we are creating.

– Chalk pastels: Chalk pastels appeal to children and adults because of their deep and subtle colors and gentle textures. Rather than drawing a picture we asked the families to explore the pastels on paper. What different techniques could be found to manipulate the colors and marks? Beautiful shades of colour were discovered.

– Wire: Wire is a glorious material to manipulate. The way the light reflects off the metal adds to its beauty and potential for children’s learning. We encouraged the families to experiment with the texture and movement in the wire.

– Loose parts: We chose natural and recycled loose parts for sustainability and because our children experience these every day at school. We knew that this encounter would perhaps be a challenge for the families, but once they realized there was no ‘right or wrong’ we noticed an excited buzz. Loose parts foster problem-solving, co-operation and creativity, the possibilities are infinite!

Throughout the workshop we noticed the parents collaborating and talking together when engaging and exploring the materials. Just how our children at school do. Children are incredible at thinking abstractly and creatively. For adults, it can be harder! For example, with the water hyacinth, parents had the mind set of weaving and they started to weave immediately when seeing it, meanwhile, children are open to other possibilities. They see available materials in beautiful fresh ways, through the eyes of the child.

ANTI-BULLYING ASSEMBLY

Over the past few weeks, we have been engaged in discussions about bullying. The Primary and Middle School Learners will discuss bullying: what it is; what it may look like; and what we can and should do if we encounter it. This coincides with Anti-Bullying Week which is marked in the UK and many other countries to address the issue of bullying. The aim is to empower children and teenagers to confront bullying and build a more empathetic culture at school.

We focused our discussions around bystanders and their crucial role in solving this problem. We discussed ways that we could help the younger learners understand what bullying means and what we can do about it if we see it. This led to some role plays, which evolved into filmed sequences. You each volunteered for different roles – bully, victim, bystander – for the various types of bullying you wanted to explain.

We held the anti-bullying assembly and you got your turn in the spotlight, leading the Primary School in this initiative. After our rehearsal and some valuable input from Mr. Ed about the need to convey the seriousness of bullying and its impact, it was time to take to the stage. You spoke confidently and deftly handled questions and comments from the younger learners. You made them feel comfortable sharing and I was impressed with the maturity of your responses to them. After the assembly, many of the younger learners were asking to see the presentation, and particularly your videos, again. I think your hard work really paid off because you have inspired some very important conversations.

AURORA PUBLISHING HOUSE – A COMMUNITY OF AUTHORS

First week of Book Celebrations – AURORA PUBLISHING HOUSE – A community of Authors. There was an excited buzz throughout the school with children, teachers and families browsing and reading the wonderful collection on offer from Phuong Nam Book store. You are all very welcome to come in and browse the shelves and perhaps you will find books you love. Next week Fahasa will join our book fair and once again children and families can browse and select favourite books. A book lovers dream.

We are busy creating cosy book gardens for children and families to enjoy books together. Please come and stay in school with us to enjoy your reading. We are hoping that this will become a ritual that continues throughout the year. A strong culture of books is our wish.

ALL THAT SPARKLES

December is a special month when many different cultural celebrations take place around the world. We believe that it’s the perfect opportunity to teach and learn about inclusivity, respect for diversity, and the beauty of different traditions. This month we are exploring and learning how December can be a time for sharing and embracing various cultures. We have families from all over the world in our school and one thing we have in common is that we all come together, celebrate and have beautiful, connected moments with friends and families.

This year at Aurora we had our ‘All That Sparkles: Encountering Light Through Cultural Celebrations’ learning and cultural celebration. This celebration was a time to celebrate connection, wonder and joy. We had an incredible time and we hope that you felt it the way we did. From the amazing performances to candle light concert, the aurora lights, the cultural light festival and shadow puppets. Aurora had a wonderful sparkle day filled with a bundle of love, joy and happiness.

Thank you all Aurora families, children, teachers and staffs for a wonderful year that we had together. We wish you all a happy holiday.

CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOP

Calligraphy giving is a special traditional custom in Vietnam that originated from the art of writing beautifully. The Calligraphy Master (Ông Đồ) not only teaches how to write but also transmits the art of Vietnamese calligraphy to future generations with the desire to preserve the culture of valuing letters as well as the nation’s tradition of being studious.

This Tet, the children in Aurora met Calligraphy Master again to learn about the culture of calligraphy giving as well as how to write it so they can give letters to their families. Although children aren’t familiar with the brush and how to control it, every stroke of their handwriting is always filled with love for their parents.

Aurora hopes that through learning about traditional Vietnamese arts as well as practical experiences, children will love and preserve the cultural values of the country where they are living.

TẾT AT AURORA – THE REUNION OF THE DRAGON AND THE PHOENIX

Tết, a significant celebration here in Vietnam, comes with an emphasis on reunions and sharing. At Aurora this year the atmosphere was festive, with Vietnamese traditional folk games, music, magical Spring and Dragon explorations and delicious Tết cuisine. The highlight of the day was the Tết concert, with amazing performers from all of our Aurora children and finishing with a spectacular finale by children drumming to welcome a prosperous year of the Dragon. Tết at Aurora was even more meaningful when primary and middle school learners decided to make and create beautiful handmade crafts to sell at our Tết fair and raise funds for charity.

Thank you so much for joining us over the weekend to celebrate the arrival of The Year of the Dragon. It was a beautiful and meaningful morning full of joy and much fun. A celebration together that will be remembered always with love.

Thank you from all of us at Aurora

AURORA SPORTS DAY 2023

A BIG thank you to all our learners, parents, teachers, and staff for making our Sports Day a HUGE success, it was a wonderful way to end on a high (energy) note.

MOCHI-TSUKI – JAPANESE NEW YEAR MOCHI

Mochi-tsuki, or pounding rice to make mochi (rice cakes), is an important traditional event in preparation for the New Year in Japan. Japanese people believe eating mochi on New Year will bring good health and longevity for the whole year.

On Japanese culture day, our Japanese teacher and some Japanese parents came to Aurora to show children how to make traditional Japanese mochi. All children were so excited by the hammering of the sticky rice and delighted in tasting the delicious treats afterwards.

BLOOMING FLOWER WORKSHOP 2024

Thank you to all Aurora families who came to the “Blooming Flowers” workshop where we created a beautiful blossom that celebrates the women we love.

We also got a surprise from Junior Primary 3 learners for a wonderful song to celebrate Women’s Day. Thank you, learners, for the wonderful and warm performance.
To all women around us – you make our world shine.

DIALOGUE WITH CULTURE 2024

Throughout the month of May Aurora children and learners explored diverse cultures by asking questions and allowing their curiosity to lead them to learn about cultures that may be new to them. These explorations allowed them to celebrate the wonderful diversity that surrounds them and also to discover commonalities that connect us all.

In the last few weeks, we welcomed families to visit classes to share an aspect of their culture with the children and learners. We focused on elements of culture that brought us together and supported us in the building of a peaceful and closely connected learning community. That included aspects such as dance, art, music, games, and food.

Thank you all for supporting us in forging closer bonds and expanding our mutual understanding within our school community. This is also a chance for us to strengthen the partnership between children, family and school.
Please take a look at our Culture Day last Friday with lots of fun and contribution from children and learners and their families.

MID-YEAR FESTIVAL – TẾT ĐOAN NGỌ 2024

Mid-Year Festival (Tết Đoan Ngọ) is also known as the “insect-killing festival”. This is a unique Vietnamese holiday which occurs annually on the 5th of May in the lunar calendar. This festival is held to catch insects, destroy pests that harm crops, and pray for a bountiful harvest. We also believe that when eating sour fruits in the morning, we can chase away parasite in our tummy.

One of the signature dishes at the festival is Floating Cake: made from glutinous rice flour filled with mung bean paste, and served with a sweet soup…A delicious taste. We invited all children to try to make their own floating rice cake. The dough was coloured with Gac fruit, beetroot and pandan leaves. Children were curious and excited at their first time seeing the Gac fruit and smelling the pandan leaves. They enjoyed the process of making the cake and fruits of the season.

Mid-Year festival is not simply a holiday, but also an opportunity for people to bond in love, together to cultivate and preserve the good cultural values of the nation.

𝐌𝐈𝐃-𝐀𝐔𝐓𝐔𝐌𝐍 𝐅𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐀𝐋 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 – 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐍 𝐌𝐎𝐎𝐍𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓

🏮Every year, as the eighth lunar month approaches, Asian countries come alive with the festive spirit of the Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the traditional celebrations rich in cultural heritage. Living up to that spirit, under the concept of “The Eastern Moonlight,” the festive atmosphere was vividly recreated at Aurora School.

🌟 The beauty of Asian cultural fusion was showcased through traditional workshops. All families were excited to join and make their own creative lanterns, decorate Vietnamese papier mache masks, make traditional Vietnamese snowskin mooncakes, and explore Japanese culture by making Dango. Moreover, the stage was always lively with special performances prepared by all teachers and learners. In addition, the tale of Mr. Cuội and the Banyan tree was narrated under the perspectives of Light and Shadow, adding a new experience to such a familiar tale.

The celebration came to an end with a dazzling lion dance, a symbol of prosperity and good fortune. We sincerely appreciated all families for coming and making memories with us!

HAPPY MID-AUTUMN. We wish you all a day fullfilled with lots of love and happiness with your family.

MAGICAL GARDEN PARTY

INTO THE MAGICAL LAND

The Magical Garden is a delightful adventure into the world of fairies and magic… You love adventure and want to let your imagination fly!

Your day began with the Magical Land of light and shadow. You were quite curious and enjoyed the shadows of fabrics, other tools, and even your own body. You touched and caught your shadows in surprise. Some of you were playing with the overhead projector, observing how it’s light impacts the environment: when you closed the lid, the room became dark, and when you opened it – you could see the shadows on the wall appear again. What wonderful cause and effect.

During the day, all of you dressed up in your favourite costumes and really enjoyed the party, finding the Fairy Houses, experimenting “Poison” Station with the witches, creating Magic Bubbles, Magic Soup and tasting delicious food.

Children, please keep this in your heart: the day you decide that your life is magical, suddenly there will be magic all around you!

Magical Garden Party was inspired by International Fairy Tea Party. This is Aurora’s third year joining the day and it became a lovely part of our culture.

“International Fairy Tea Party is a day to share the learning power of play and imagination. It was originally held on the Friday closest to the equinox this has been extended to 3-4 days closest to the equinox (21st September) in order to be more inclusive. The aim is that all children around the world are united by the fact that they have the same number of daylight hours… even if they do not share the same cultures, language, resources etc – we will share the daylight and the imagination and the play.” – International Fairy Tea Party

CELEBRATION OF LEARNING 2022 – 2023

CONGRATULATIONS AURORA LEARNERS ON YOUR GRADUATION

MID-YEAR FESTIVAL – TẾT ĐOAN NGỌ

MID-YEAR FESTIVAL – TẾT ĐOAN NGỌ

As a tradition, every year we celebrate the Mid-Year Festival (Tết Đoan Ngọ). The Mid-Year festival is held to catch insects, destroy pests that harm crops, and pray for a bountiful harvest. One of the must-have dishes at the festival is a Floating Rice Cake: made from glutinous rice flour filled with green bean paste, and served with a sweet soup… A delicious taste.

Aurora children were invited to join a workshop to make a special treat for this festival: Floating cake or Bánh Trôi Nước. And children were very excited for it. Colorful, soft rice dough and small balls of green bean were prepared for you by our kitchen. Some of you joined straight away to make colorful balls of floating cakes. Some of you were interested in the fruits and special traditional herbs with roots, stems, and leaves on the tables. You were rolling big and small balls and transporting them onto the tray that we took to the kitchen to boil.

Aurora hopes all children have had a lovely time on Tết Đoan Ngọ this year. We believe that environment and community play a crucial role in educating children. As we are living in Vietnam, we encourage children to discover and gain an understanding of the Vietnamese culture in a supportive and rich learning environment. Celebrating important festivals is what we love here.

NATSU MATSURI – JAPANESE SUMMER FESTIVAL

NATSU MATSURI – JAPANESE SUMMER FESTIVAL

“Natsu Matsuri” means Summer Festival in Japanese. This is the annual tradition of Japanese people to celebrate the gods, seasons, and joy of life in the summer.

With the support of Japanese parents, Ms Kaori – our Japanese teachers, and all Aurora teachers and children, we had a wonderful festival filled with shuri-ken (throwing star), wanage (ring toss), and yo-yo tsuri (fishing) games, sushi and cho-chin (lantern) workshops, Japanese cuisine, kakigori (shaved ice) and a yukata photo booth. Our fabulous day has been wrapped up with the Bon-Odori dance.

HAPPY WOMEN’S DAY

CANDLE LIGHTS WILL SHINE

Dad is the light of gold

Mom is the light of blue

Baby is the light of rose

Three candle lights will shine

Shining a family

(Song: Three Candle Lights Will Shine – Phuong Thao, Ngoc Le)

In Vietnam, candlelight symbolizes warmth, happiness, and family members. Traditionally the role of the women in a family is known as the one who keeps the “home flame” with her eternal love and care. On this Women’s Day, Aurora International School of the Arts invited all mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, and the special woman in children’s lives to attend our candle making workshop. During this workshop, mothers, and grandmothers explored how to make scented candles that they can cherish.

STORY OF TẾT

CÂU CHUYỆN NGÀY TẾT

Tết is not only calculated by days and months but also by flowers and fruits, by the hustle and bustle. Tết comes with the arrival of spring and brings joy to all. This is also the time we tell stories about gathering, reunion, love, festival and joy.

Tết is the time when family and friends gather to have a year-end meal together. Everyone is busy cleaning up the New Year’s Eve offerings and decorating the house to welcome a new year with lots of fun and good luck.

Thank you Aurora families for coming and enjoying the excitement of Tết with us through Spring flea market as well as the senses, arts, tastes, folk games, colours and stories of Tết.

✨ Happy Lunar New Year 2023 ✨

ONE HUNDRED LANGUAGES OF CHRISTMAS

What a wonderful day we had celebrating Christmas. A lot of excitement, laughter and love was shared.

Thank you families for coming and celebrating with us.

SPOOKY! SCARY! FUN!

SPOOKY! SCARY! FUN! 👻
It’s Halloween and Aurora children came to school wearing their favorite costumes. It took us a while to recognize who you were and which characters you were dressed as 👻 All of you were so excited to go for “trick or treat”, to explore the school and to see other children in their amazing costumes.
On this occasion, you also prepared gifts for our support staff to say thank you for all that they do. Thank you, children. It’s so touching and we love all the gifts from you. After giving, you experienced a scavenger hunt and some trick or treating. You all genuinely enjoyed waltzing around the Aurora grounds in your costumes hunting for clues and collecting some treats. It was such an engaging time and a pleasure to see the bright smiles whilst you took part in this ‘spooktacular’ holiday.

AURORA PUBLISHING HOUSE

WALKING FEET ON BOOK STREET

To prepare for Aurora Publishing House, the children had an excursion to Book Street last week with excitement. They searched high and low to find the exact books they were looking for. Children also displayed absolute confidence while browsing the stores and asking for help from the shopkeepers when they needed it. They talked about different types of books and searched for answers on book scavenger hunts. They took responsibility for their own money, politely asked for the prices and handed over the cash (with a little teacher’s help). Some Primary children also recommended books to each other; made calculations and budgeted out their money for the books they loved.

The class listened carefully to the teachers, and kept safe and together at all times. Children showed such maturity throughout the excursion. It was a great pleasure to explore this part of our beautiful city with you all.

STORIES FROM DIFFERENT CULTURES

One of the beautiful things from Book week in particular has been the chance for children to engage with cultural tales from different parts of the world.

Our wonderful co-teachers put on a magnificent performance of ‘How The Tiger Got Its Stripes’. The story followed the Vietnamese legend of the farmer in the rice field and his buffalo, who was approached by a tiger and got stripes on its body. Children were an immensely engaged, curious, and respectful audience. During the week, the Japanese teacher also led an interactive reading of the origins of the Japanese zodiac, followed by an origami session to create a cat or rabbit. Children enjoyed the workshop and also learned the reason why cats were not on the Japanese zodiac.

IN THE PROCESS OF LEARNING, TEACHERS, PARENTS AND THE CHILD ARE VIEWED AS COLLABORATORS

During Book Week, Aurora parents were welcome to come and read books for children at school. When children kept saying “one more, please?” or “again!” at the end of a story, we knew they enjoyed the storytelling time.

At Aurora, parents are viewed as vital components and contributors to the School’s philosophy and are encouraged to involve themselves in every aspect of their child’s learning experiences. Parents are encouraged and recognized as the child’s first educators.

Thank you, parents, for spending your precious time coming in and sharing your stories with us during Book Week. We are happy to see books bring us together at Aurora.

AURORA FAIRY TEA PARTY

Our children were invited to join the International Fairy Tea Party. Aurora children dressed up in all their favourite costumes, some of them transformed into fairies with wings and wreaths . Throughout the week they also chose locations to create and decorate fairy houses. On the day there were Magic Bubbles, Magic Wands, Magic Soup, Fairy Fruits and Fairy Drawing stations, all created by the children.

This was our second time joining this imaginary party and the children really enjoyed it.

“International Fairy Tea Party – Celebrated on a day where all the children around the world share the fact that we have 12 hours of daylight – the equinox! We might not all share the same resources, the same seasons, the same cultures or religions… but we can share the fact we ALL have 12 hours of daylight and we can celebrate children’s right to PLAY.

Play outdoors and explore nature… fairies give you the chance to see the little things up close…”

(International Fairy Tea Party)

MID-AUTUMN CELEBRATION

The Mid-Autumn Festival (Tết Trung Thu) is also known in Vietnam as the “Children’s Festival”. In the memory of Vietnamese children, the day always comes with beautiful lanterns and delicious mooncakes.

Aurora children start to engage in the Mid-Autumn Celebration with the Mooncake making workshop. With the guide of the artisan, children were so excited to make the cakes by themselves with their choices of the fillings and shapes of the molds. The finished products are wrapped carefully and sent back home as a gift for parents in this festival.

We had a meaningful time together at Aurora on this day with our children, teachers and families. We hope that children’s childhood will be associated with beautiful memories of the cultures and traditions in Vietnam, where they are living and growing.

Thank you families for coming to lighten Aurora with all your love, joy and happiness

CULTURAL STORIES OF CHRISTMAS

Cultural Stories of Christmas at Aurora.

Thank you to all of our families for sharing our wonderful day.

Our Christmas story this year comes from the celebration of books and the storytelling that exists within these. We have thoroughly enjoyed families coming in to share festive cultural traditions and stories with our children leading up to today’s celebration.

Our children led wonderful workshops that spoke to the stories of various Christmas traditions around the world. Children and their families were invited to collaborate on an art piece inspired by images from Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker.

There was wonderful singing from our children and teachers and an overall feeling of love and joy.

The arrival of our Tropical Santa was a big surprise that brought much laughter and happiness to everyone.

Aurora would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG

Spring has Sprung

Welcoming Spring in Vietnam is a magical time of year. The arrival of spring brings joy to all. Blossoms are everywhere and people thank the land for providing them with such blessings. At Aurora, we wanted to bring this feeling to our children and community. We shared with children the value of rice and the rich role it plays in Vietnam’s agricultural history as they planted their very own seeds. Rice harvested by our support staff was brought in for our children to experience the various stages of the magnificent rice plant. Colorful blossoms and flowers filled our school, so upon arrival each day, we were able to observe our children’s awe and wonder as they felt surrounded by new beginnings. Spring had arrived. We wish you all a happy and prosperous lunar new year.

Chuc Mung Nam Moi.
