Mid-Year Festival (Tết Đoan Ngọ) is also known as the “insect-killing festival”. This is a unique Vietnamese holiday which occurs annually on the 5th of May in the lunar calendar. This festival is held to catch insects, destroy pests that harm crops, and pray for a bountiful harvest. We also believe that when eating sour fruits in the morning, we can chase away parasite in our tummy.
One of the signature dishes at the festival is Floating Cake: made from glutinous rice flour filled with mung bean paste, and served with a sweet soup…A delicious taste. We invited all children to try to make their own floating rice cake. The dough was coloured with Gac fruit, beetroot and pandan leaves. Children were curious and excited at their first time seeing the Gac fruit and smelling the pandan leaves. They enjoyed the process of making the cake and fruits of the season.
Mid-Year festival is not simply a holiday, but also an opportunity for people to bond in love, together to cultivate and preserve the good cultural values of the nation.
